General VK Singh Loses his Case in the Supreme Court

General VK Singh had his day of reckoning on 10 Feb 2012. The Supreme Court of India advised the General that though he had the proof, yet by his own act of omission and commission the case for an amendment of his date of birth for extension as the army chief did not hold water. A hurried consultation with his lawyer convinced the general that his case did not stand a favorable verdict in the Supreme Court. He decided to withdraw his petition and accordingly the Supreme Court disposed of the case as 'petition withdrawn'.
It was a sad end to much of bravado that the general had shown. knowledgeable people were always of the view that the general would lose and going to the supreme Court was not a good thing. What if every general soldier decided to go to the Supreme Court. It would have affected the fighting efficiency of the force.
The question is as to what the general achieved by this act of his. I think he achieved precious little except for some snide remarks that may hurt the General. VK Singh now retires on 31 may 2012 unless he opts to resign straightway away. All in all the actions of general VK Singh showed the general in poor light. How much better in case he had petitioned the supreme court in a matter concerning the welfare of the army than his personal matter ? But then great men and ordinary are different and VK Singh comes in the second category.
